"Mother Nature never fails to amaze me, and lately I've been fascinated with feathers. I find all shapes, sizes, colors and configurations on the ground in my woods and I have collected them for years. I knew a single feather would be a dramatic - and challenging - subject for a scratchboard project.

As usual, I used my reference to study the details. The curve of the center shaft, the parallel appearance and breaks in the feather fibers,  the soft downy feathers at the bottom, and the different color values are features I aimed to capture to make my feather art look realistic.

Deciding what scratching tools and techniques would best depict these feathers took some experimentation. I did some masking, used a scriber, tattoo needles, scratching nibs, and even a sewing needle. I found the best combination and completed "Frequent Flyer" and "Foxtrot-Lima-Yankee" (which is alpha for 'FLY') for my first two feather portraits. I loved getting such a big impact on a panel only the size of an index card. I had such fun, watch for more!"
