"The wild hair of this alpaca named “Charlie” made me think ‘bad hair day’ every time I looked at the photos I had taken in my friend’s pasture. I was inspired to recreate his image on a scratchboard, where I could vary the the textures from the longer messed up locks to the shorter tidy neck fur to the smooth flesh of his snout.
I had planned to do this artwork on an 11x14 panel, but a midnight inspiration made me reconsider a square format turned on the diagonal. I’ve done diamond-shaped paintings in watercolor, acrylics, and scratchboards and it adds a uniqueness which draws attention. The alpaca lended itself perfectly to the 12”x12” board, turned 45°. The chain link fence was my addition, a way to balance the composition, anchor the figure, and create additional shapes and textures. Leaving a stark black background it a fun part of using scratchboard, directing all the viewer’s attention to the main subject.
“Bad Hair Day” was so fun to create and hopefully brings a grin to those who see it."
