"Forgive my pun, but I was driven to do this painting by the fabulous textures and colors on the old corroding car. I especially love how the word “Studebaker” is readable by the rust stain which surrounded the broken off emblem. For me, the real charm is that this 1961 model was purchased in Knoxville Tennessee, the closest big city to my home.

This is the largest watercolor I have done on a white clay-coated Aquabord panel to date. I tried to emphasize the complementary colors of orange and blue throughout. I used the unique property of Aquabord to re-wet and lift paint, lightening color or revealing the original white surface below painted areas. As a final touch, I did a small amount of scratching through the painted surface to reveal the white layer below, as on the fine horizontal lines on the red headlight.

The archivist at the National Studebaker Museum helped confirm my conclusion that this is a 1961 Studebaker Lark VI 2-Door Sedan in Riviera Blue. My painting has brought up memories among friends, especially baby-boomers like me."

* The juror for the TnWS Online Exhibition, Mary Ann Beckwith, said about selecting Baby Boomer for the award: "Congratulations! I love your work and found it very fresh and beautifully executed. Your design is sensitive and so well done. As much as I know you must plan carefully your composition, it feels very spontaneous, fresh and innovative! My goal for the show was to select the best work in all styles or genres. Work like yours made that easy. Congratulations! Well deserved!"
