ACCOLADES: Accepted into the 2021 Tennessee Watercolor Society 50th Anniversary Online Exhibition, and awarded Honorable Mention. Juror Cathy Hillegas said: “This is a very very powerful piece. It conveys emotion while still being somewhat open to interpretation. It has a very strong composition and both light-dark contrast and color contrast leads your eye to the figure, around the piece and back to the figure. The opposite colors of red and green catch our eye and they feel a little jarring, which sort of adds to the theme of the whole piece. The realistic figure stands out against the softer, more abstract background and shows skill with the medium.”
"I consider this painting to be a landmark for me, as I painted it specifically to arouse emotions, not just as a pretty picture as with my other artwork. The figure, reflected flag, spattered red paint, and lettering are meant to be symbolic; the meaning left ambiguous and open to interpretation by the viewer. I tried hard to incorporate some abstraction with my typical realistic detailed style, just for some contrast and added drama. To reflect a somber mood, I changed from my usual palette of bright colors to more earthly tones.
My husband Rick was my model for the figure in the painting, the first time I have done a painting of him, but watch for more to come. He dislikes having his photo taken, but he posed just as I asked and immediately gave me exactly the effect I wanted as reference for this painting."
