"I love to paint animals and got the notion to try an alpaca portrait to add to my repetoire. This cute guy was one of three which belonged to a family I know, so I visited and took loads of reference photos of these naturally cute subjects. "Harley," with white fur, is the first of what I hope will be many alpaca portraits.

This painting is done in watercolor on a white scratchboard, Ampersand's Aquabord™. Scratchboards are ideal for depicting fur, since the painted areas can be scratched through to reveal the white clay surface below. I also enjoyed using this panel since it allowed me to soften and remove dried paint simply by re-wetting it and blotting it away. This helped me to create the soft appearance of Harley's thick fur on his body.

With the bright colors and smiling face, "Happy Harley" quickly came to mind as the perfect title. As people saw my finished painting, I quickly learned that many have an affection for alpacas. Happy Harley served well as my theme painting for a 3-month solo show at Rarity Bay in Vonore TN (April-June 2019)."
