“The forest which surrounds my home are rich with flora and fauna, and a never-ending source of inspiration for my artwork. Pileated woodpeckers are a year-round resident here. Their drumming on trees echoes loudly and their shrill calls sound like they belong in a tropical rain forest. This striking bird is an impressive sight - black and white feathers on the head and neck, a brilliant red crest on the heads of both males and females, a long beak, and length of 16 to 19 inches. The male is distinctive for the red stripe on his check.

Perched on a decaying tree, this bird made an excellent subject for a scratchboard. I chose to keep the background solid black (unscratched) for drama. A touch of color on the tree helped define it without distracting from my main subject.”
