"I set up several items to create a reference for a still life, combining different textures. The fresh peaches looked so delicious, and I thought it would be interesting to paint them on a white scratchboard panel, so I could create the soft fuzzy texture. The old tin pail creates a contrast, with a smooth but blotchy finish, accented with areas of rust. The long white cotton doily with hand tatted lace breaks up the surface of the table, and I purposely positioned it so with interesting folds, highlights and shadows.
This painting is done on Claybord™, which is a white surfaced panel manufactured by Ampersand Arts and used for scratch-art. The panel had been my supply stash for a while. More recently I've been using a white scratchboard with a textured surface called Aquabord™, which I have grown to prefer to the smooth surface. A similar comparison is the textured surface of cold-press watercolor paper (my preference) vs. the smooth surface of hot-press watercolor paper. I struggle with a smooth surface and it takes more effort to get the results I am striving for. In the end, I am happy with how this painting came out."
