"I'm honing my watercolor techniques again, working toward some entries for an upcoming exhibition. To get my feet wet, I chose two of my favorite subjects, an old barn and a critter. When I photographed this barn window it was empty, but I loved the variety of interesting elements: the rusty bar which the barn door would hang and slide from, the batten on the bottom siding and none on the top, the broken board with hinges hanging in the window, and the weathered wood. I have a collection of my own cow photos, and I knew this girl would stand out well against the emptiness behind her. The white face against the blackness creates a stronge focal point, drawing the viewer's eye to the part of the painting with the boldest contrast between dark and light values. I liked her pose which allowed me to hang her chin out over the window trim, giving her more dimension. The tag on her ear inspired my title, adopted from an old song written by Sam Cooke, recorded by others - most successfully by Dr. Hook."
