Chevy Short Bed

I’ve been anxious to try a watercolor whiskey painting on a Claybord™ panel, one of my favorite painting surfaces. The official specifications of bona-fide Whiskey Paintings is that the size must not exceed 20 sq. in. Ampersand Art offers Claybord in 4”x4” size, perfect for this project.

I used QoR® watercolors, choosing a limited palette of 2 reds, 2 yellows, 2 blues plus an orange. This provided me with warm and cool color options and the ability to mix an unlimited variety of other colors. Before putting the brush to my panel I created test swatches to make it easier for me to get just the shades I want once I started the painting.

I had taken photos of an old truck which I saw parked in an auto repair shop lot. The textures of the rusted body and wood truck bed, along with some of the original shiny chrome, created lots of interest. I knew I would enjoy depicting them in watercolor. Evidently I did a good job, since the first person who saw this painting purchased it. In addition, his artist friend who framed it said he liked it so much that he considered “losing it” before it was picked up, so he could hang it on his own wall!”

This Whiskey Painting was created with watercolors diluted with Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey.
