“I never truly knew the beauty and variety of wild flowers until I moved to my current home in Tennessee. On a walk early one spring morning soon after moving here I came across a hillside covered with blooms. The rest is history… I have developed a passion for spring wildflowers, fueled by having now identified (and photographed) more than 100 species on my own property. What better painting subject is there than something you love?
I filtered through my photo reference files to find wildflowers with strong sunlight and shadows. Wild geraniums flower in early spring, before the leaves come out on the deciduous trees in our forest. Every year I walk the trail which passes a large bed of pink wild geraniums with their faces absorbing full sunshine. This was a perfect subject for me to paint. I combined several reference photos to include leaves. Geranium flower parts are groups of five, including the petals and the lobes on each leaf. It was challenging but fun to capture the details of the flower centers in my painting.”
