"I have photographed this bagpipe player nearly every time Rick and I attend the nearest annual Highland Games, the Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival. The opening ceremony, when the mass of pipe and drum bands march together, is absolutely exhilarating. I'd always scurry to get at the front of the crowds to get some photos of individual band members like this gentleman. His appearance is full of character, with his traditional dress and, especially, his cheeks full of air! For a long time I've wanted to create a painting of him, and finally tackled it - in miniature.

This is a new 'whiskey-color' painting. Its size is the maximum in the specifications set by the Whiskey Painters of America. I painted this prior to submitting my membership request. The group permits any type of spirits to dilute watercolor paints. For this small painting, I thought it most appropriate to use Scotch Whiskey, and chose Famous Grouse which is one of Rick's favorites - I stick to wine or cider when I indulge!

Working so small made it challenging to paint the details of the bagpipes and the clothing. I simplified along the way, including the background. Perhaps someday I'll tackle this subject again, in a larger format."

This Whiskey Painting was created with watercolors diluted with Famous Grouse Scotch.
