“As another in my series of floral whiskey watercolor paintings I wanted to try a yellow flower. The black sunflower seeds from our bird feeders often drop to the ground and bless me with gorgeous blooms like this one. I had photographed it facing the early morning sun, with some dewdrops still attached to the petals.
I chose this reference photo also because the side view of a sunflower is less commonly depicted than the full front of the blossom. I loved the layers of green bracts on the back side, with their fuzzy edges, varying hues and curvy shapes. There is great variation in the petals too, with colors changing from bright yellow to light and dark orange where they overlapped or shaded one another. What a pleasure it was to capture this gift from Mother Nature!”
This Whiskey Painting was created with watercolors diluted with Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey.
