A year ago, I never would have imagined that I might change my focus as a watercolor painter. I’ve been painting with watercolors since 1980, so change is a big deal…. and creating whiskey paintings is the main reason. As many artists would agree, we can become addicted to our painting passion - and that’s how I have felt about creating whiskey paintings during the past couple of months.
What has being a whiskey painter done for me? Here’s a short list:
1) taught me the enjoyment of creating mini watercolor paintings
2) hooked me on painting series with variations on a single subject (Claude Monet knew the value in this!)
3) encouraged me to aim for a strong impact in a small format
4) prompted me to finding unique ways to present my 20 sq.in. whiskey art creations (see my circle painting above; 19.63" sq.in. is the area of a 5" circle)
5) guided me into using Claybord™ instead of watercolor paper for my whiskey painting surface (using 4" square panels)
5) pushed me to expand my watercolor knowledge and techniques
Recently I’ve spent so much time painting that I haven’t added a blog post in a while. In the near future I plan to illustrate these new directions with my watercolors, using my newest whiskey paintings to share my journey with you. Stay tuned!
