My Portrait – A Winner!

|

As you can see, it’s not a self-portrait or even a human portrait. It’s my dog Maggie, who is now 11 years old. My reference was one of many photos I took of her the first day we adopted her as a 7-lb shelter puppy. Her innocence fooled us then – she turned out to be the most challenging pup we ever raised. Today she is calm and loving, but she occasionally shows her stubborn and independent streak! Her eyes … Read More

I’m Doing A Happy Dance!

I’ve just learned that my watercolor painting on Aquabord™ “Baby Boomer” has been awarded the 2nd Place “Award of Excellence” in the Tennessee Watercolor Society’s 2023 Online Exhibition. In chosing the show and award winners, Juror Mary Ann Beckwith said “It is a wonderful collection of paintings executed with creativity and skill exemplifying the many competent watercolorists of the TnWS. I selected paintings with strong content, design, and beauty, drawing my attention and keeping it. It was difficult to pare … Read More

Some Constructive Criticism

|

It’s a rare opportunity to get a critique by an internationally renowned artist, so I jumped at the chance when it arose. Watercolorist Stan Miller was the juror for the 2022 Tennessee Watercolor Society’s Biennial Exhibition, currently in Chattanooga. I have admired his exquisite paintings for years (see one example from his website shown here) and I was honored that he chose my painting as one of 60 selected for the Exhibition. Mr. Miller extended an invitation to every exhibitor … Read More

What A Wonderful World

My newest and largest in a series of paintings with blown bubbles has just been accepted into the 2020 Tennessee Watercolor Society Biennial Exhibition. International watercolor artist and juror Soon Warren selected “What A Wonderful World” as one of 72 paintings for the show. My painting “Eat Chicken” was the Best in Show winner at the Society’s 2018 biennial exhibit. Perhaps now I’ll become known as the bubble lady instead of the cow lady…?!?! This painting features my great-nephew Liam, … Read More

Making Ordinary into Beauty

“Best In Show” is an award I never expected to attain from the preeminent Tennessee Watercolor Society, but it all happened last week. At the opening of the 2018 Biennial Juried Exhibition, my painting “Eat Chicken”  came in first place! I was already honored to have only one of sixty paintings chosen for the show (173 were submitted by 101 watercolor artists from the 250+ membership and non-members.) These exhibitions illustrate the finest watercolors in the state of Tennessee, … Read More

“Volunteers Is In!”

|

I recently tried something new – entering a painting in an Online Art Exhibit. It’s an interesting concept… entries are sent in as digital images (according to what is defined in the rules as acceptable) and the show is judged in the same way as a conventional ‘hang-in-a-gallery’ type of art exhibition. With an online show, the nice part for the selected artists is that you don’t need to ship your painting, the digital image just gets posted to a … Read More
