"9 Lives includes nine portraits of my cat Jethro. I created each of these 3.5” squares on the same surface, a smooth white clay-coated panel called Ampersand Claybord™Art Tiles. I’ve used Claybord panels for many paintings in watercolors and inks, but for this series I used a different art medium on each portrait. These portraits illustrate the amazing versatility of this art panel, and I featured them in a presentation called "Claybord 101 - The Ultimate Art Panel."
The media used for 9 Lives includes (left to right):
- top row: watercolors, photo image transfer, acrylics
- middle row: sumo ink, colored pencils, Claybord/Scratchbord™ inks
- bottom row: gouache, graphite, colored markers
Jethro was more than willing to be my model for this project - he's a real ham, full of personality and affection. Since I planned to use some art media that I hadn’t used in decades, as well as some I never used, selecting a pet portrait as my subject kept me well within my comfort zone. I purposely planned this series to include a variety of styles, poses, and colors. One square was even turned 45°, as I’ve done with some of my large paintings, for added interest. It was a fun and challenging project and well-received by my presentation's audience.
