"I envisioned this painting soon after the Covid-19 masking and 6' distancing recommendations came into effect. I had observed customers lined up outside a specialty shop which smokes hams and bacon on site. Not only were they masked and distanced, they had their orders filled and payments taken without having to enter the shop. When I read the business slogan on the outside wall, "We Cure 'Em," this painting came together in my mind... but it took me 2 more years to figure out how to make it come together on paper!
I used artistic license to rearrange the exterior of the building, simplifying the scene so my painting would focus on the slogan and the masked figures. I loved including a variety of figures and capturing the simple gestures, casual poses, and textures of the clothing. I aimed to have the painting tell a story as well as document an unusual time in our history."
