"Wildflowers are a favorite subject in my artwork. The wild thistle flower is an ideal scratchboarding topic, with the bud, open flower, and seed pod presenting a variety of interesting surfaces and textures. The feathery white fluff which carries the seeds on a breeze just begged to be depicted with fine white scratched lines on a Scratchbord™ panel. The challenge in scratchboard art is to create a range of values: from pure white through many gray tones, to the solid black of the surface.
To enhance my composition I kept my floral area within a circle and created a subtle background texture outside its edges. I chose not to add any color to this scratchboard, highlighting the pure scratching techniques themselves."
