"I decided to do this red fox using a limited palette of watercolors, concentrating on earth colors. I began with the background, using the same colors I'd be using elsewhere but diluting them to be light values. I decided to have a more 'painterly' appearance for the background, in contrast with the realism of the rest of the painting.
I painted with watercolor to a near finished painting stage prior to doing any scratching of details. The metal sign was interesting to paint, with more reflection on the left side due to it being bent in the center. Initially I left the "Beware" letters white, but they were stealing attention from the fox so I added mottled color to tone them down. Depth can be created beautifully in areas of fur by painting - scratching - painting - scratching, since each layer of transparent color just lightly tints the white scratched areas. It's so fun to create eyes on scratchboards, revealing the white highlights and reflections to make the critter come alive."
Thanks to Freek Eekels for the reference photo of the red fox.
