"I did this watercolor to reproduce as my 2025 Christmas card. I have a tradition going back decades of creating original art for my cards, from pen and ink to watercolor to clayboard to scratchboard. Many people have told me they have amassed a collection of my cards, which makes me proud.
Flocks of Cedar Waxwing birds converge upon the cedar trees near my house here in Tennessee, timing their visit with the ripening of the berries. The birds’ soft colors of brown, grey and lemon yellow, along with black masks, yellow tail tips, and crests of feathers on their heads, make them easy to spot among the thick growth of the evergreen branches. Some boast bright red waxy-looking secretions on the wing feathers, thus the name. Cedar Waxwings love fruit and can actually become intoxicated if they eat overripe berries which have started to ferment. This makes sense, since our Eastern Red Cedars are actually junipers; juniper berries are the key ingredient in gin."
