"For years I have reproduced one of my paintings for my annual Christmas card. We live in a beautiful place filled with birds. Our porch feeders attract a big variety of visitors which we enjoy watching and hearing up close. Black-capped chickadees are year-round residents with several distinct strong whistles I love to hear. The little bird's black, white and grey coloring made it the perfect choice for this year's card!
I considered mistletoe for this artwork, but it grows in our trees way too high (as a parasitic plant) for me to photograph as a reference! So I paired the pretty bird with holly; American Holly trees grow wild in the forests around our Tennessee home, and are classified as broadleaf evergreens. I enjoy seeing the small ivory flowers in spring and the red berries in fall. A bit of trivia: only the female trees have flowers and berries. In my most recent scratchboard I had experimented with a background of "bokeh" lighting effects, and decided to repeat lots of these faint circles along with little snowflakes here, to make it even more Christmasy. Happy holidays '23."
