"This is a commissioned painting I almost turned down, since the reference photo of the sweet moment was a very small old snapshot, cut to fit a round frame. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do it justice if I had to struggle to paint with my usual detail. I loved the pose of the grandfather Tim, towering so tall over little Jordan, and told Miss Sandi that I'd give it my best shot.
I was able to complete the background setting with little difficulty, since it wasn't critical to match to reference photo… the faces were the primary challenge. It was a pleasure to paint the textures and folds of the clothing, so I worked them to completion before tackling the toughest part. Fortunately the faces were not front views, and I've done similar paintings with people involved in activities, so that took some pressure off me. Little by little it all came together, and I was delighted when Sandi was pleased. Commissions have a way of pushing an artist outside the comfort zone, but that's how we learn and grow.
