"This is my beautiful friend Julianna, which I painted using the reference of a black and white photo taken of her many years ago. I was in the midst of taking an online workshop by renowned artist Ali Cavanaugh, learning new techniques for painting portraits on Aquabord™, one of the white clay-coated surfaces I enjoy using. I've done many watercolor paintings on Aquabord, even a couple of portraits, but I had done them without ever receiving instruction, primarily learning from my experience with watercolor on paper and from trial and error.
"Julianna" was the first of two portraits I did based on the workshop, followed by "Lily." The latter better mimicked Ali's style since I ordered and received the same paint colors and brushes she used in her demo painting and I created the second one at a more leisurely pace after the workshop had ended.
I discovered with "Julianna" that using a black and white reference photo presented its own challenge compared with using a color photo - an added complication I didn't need with this exercise! But I worked and re-worked, using newly learned techniques, and I felt satisfied with capturing a good likeness of Julianna as well as incorporating some of my lesson."
