"This small portrait is done in watercolors on the white-clay coated surface of Aquabord™. I created "Little Sweetie" after completing an online watercolor portrait workshop by an artist I have long admired, Ali Cavanaugh. She has a unique painting style and mastery of the Aquabord surface; her portraits are internationally acclaimed and sought after for their vibrancy and glow as well as for capturing and projecting the emotion of her subjects... lofty goals for me to set my sights on, but I was ready to incorporate what I learned in my own artwork.
Lily is the daughter of my niece Molly. I chose the reference photo specifically because the pose allowed me to focus on capturing the baby's skin, in the style of Ali's demo painting. Lily's hands mostly covered up her mouth, her eyes were fabulous and well within my comfort zone, and her fluff of hair wouldn't require much attention. I cropped the photo close to her face and simplified the background.
I consider this painting a success, not only in capturing the likeness of Lily, but also in the newly-learned ways I was able to capture the values while using minimal paint coverage. I feel like I've made new strides in maximizing more of the unique characteristics of Aquabord."
