"The time-worn barnwood textures and rough rusty hardware in a photo I took were hard for me to resist depicting in a painting. I decided to use black scratchboard and inks for this work. Scratchboarding such details is a slow process, even on a relatively small painting like this, but it is also somewhat mesmerizing and rhythmic.
This subject provided the opportunity for a myriad of scratching strokes primarily made in the direction of the grain on the barnwood, coupled with random dots stippled on the padlock and nails, and linear crosshatching on the old lock. Depicting these textures really pushed me to a new level of scratching. I am thankful to have learned from extraordinary scratchboard artists, from instructional videos made available to me as a member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists.
I pushed the colors to bolder hues than what appeared in my reference photo, to make the simple subject more eye-catching and dynamic. I used cool tones in the wood surface to contrast with the warm rust colors. Leaving the black unscratched areas provides an interesting contrast and a place for the viewer's eye to rest."
