"This is one of my rare portraits of my dog Watson. He does not like having his photo taken, but he must have been too tired to object when I caught this pose on the couch, backlit by sunlight from a nearby window. I loved his wide open eyes and folds in the fabric under him, as well as the interesting depth of field with his hind quarters in less focus. We adopted Watson from the shelter 9 years ago; we don't know his breed but he would best be described as a mini white lab. I chose this as a reference photo because I liked the various values in the shadows of his solid color fur. My goals were to depict him realistically but with abstract bright colors, and to paint loose areas contrasting with fine detail.

"My Boy" seemed an appropriate title, since Watson is the only male dog who has been in our family longer than merely a foster period, joining a long list of the female dogs we've loved over the years."
