“Pansies are such a happy-looking flower, and they tolerate the cooler temperatures on each end of our mild Tennessee winter. Most of my gardens are perennials, but I enjoy displaying a pot of these showy annuals on the steps to my front door when little else is flowering.

I photographed this bloom with shades of purple and white, inky blue-black on the inner part of the lower three petals, and a patch of bright yellow in the center of its face. Working with the black and white nature of scratchboards, I translated these colors into shades of black, white and grey. I used this project as a challenge to refine my scratching techniques, making finer scratch marks and smoother value transitions. See how my marks echo the contours of the individual petal shapes. This is a very small piece, just 3” tall, so it is created with hundreds of little marks on the black scratchboard surface, uncovering the layer of white clay. I like the simplicity of the final image, opting not to add any color.”
