"A young friend of mine, named Paisley, inspired me to create this new scratchboard. She told me white tigers were one of her favorite animals. With no other art pieces in the works, I decided this would be a great subject for my next piece.
I had earmarked a terrific reference photo taken by Jan Willemsen, focusing on the tiger's face and setting him in a very relaxed pose. The photo was taken in a zoo, and the wood beam he was resting on looked too 'finished' to me. I substituted with a fallen log, photographing a standing tree with interesting bark in my woods as my guide. The tiger's face would be the focus, with its stark black and white contrast.
I used very fine scratching techniques to depict the animal realisticly in such a small size. As a finishing touch, the pale green of the tiger's eyes, pink nose and brown bark gave just the right touch of color, adding interest and further emphasizing my center of interest without being distracting."
