"Many may recognize this iconic scene as the Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. It is in a lovely setting on the southern Maine coast, where the view is easily enjoyed from the rock formations across the inlet. I visited there several years ago and have lovely memories of a summer lunch picnic, when I took many photos from this vantage point.
In recreating the image in watercolor I was inspired to make a sunrise scene from photos taken by my friend Christine when she vacationed in this area. This allowed me to emphasize the lighthouse itself, as if lit in the early morning light. I enjoyed painting the reflected sky in the calm ocean and in the puddles in the foreground rocks. I emphasized the color in the sky when I thought of a title for my painting, from the verse: 'Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."
