"The wild Showy Orchis is a magnificent plant and I am happy to share its beauty in this acrylic painting. The natural coloring of this wildflower allowed me to work with a triad color scheme of purple, green, and a touch of orange (three complementary colors). To focus attention on the plant itself, I made the background look out of focus and painted it in dark earth colors.
I selected my paint colors for their transparency, so the white of the canvas could show through and create luminosity. I preserved the white canvas where the blossoms were to appear rather than covering the entire background with color and painting lights over darks; this adds to the color brilliance. For the all-important purple petals, I painting with both a "warm" and a "cool" violet. In the end I added little sparkles of light as fine dots on the main leaf and petals, just as it appeared growing in my woodland paradise."
