ACCOLADES: This painting was juried into the 2018 Oak Ridge (TN) Art Center Open Show. The juror's critique: "While I removed many florals from the exhibition because they are so familiar, this one is very refreshing with an unusual point of view looking up at or through the flower and leaves. This artist is painting at a very high level, displaying excellent skill level and sense of light and shadow. Really well done."
"I had an odd-sized canvas gathering dust and pondered what subject might work well if I did a horizontal painting. As you can tell from my gallery, I love flowers, and I have a big reference file of my garden flowers as well as wildflowers. Working on canvas, I also wanted to challenge myself to use acrylics in a very transparent way, even to the point of allowing the white of the canvas to be the whites of my painting, just as in traditional watercolor on paper. A photo of one of my frilly red poppies in strong sunlight seemed like a good candidate for my mission. I decided to include just one fully opened blossom, and included poppy leaves in my composition to balance the arrangement. Each poppy blossom last just one day, so I captured this one at the peak of its glory!"
