"I've been experimenting with landscape painting and combined two of my photos - a farm scene photo with big barn and outbuildings and a white cow alone in a watering hole. "Artistic license" was used in composing the elements of my painting. I changed the water hole into a stream, bringing it diagonally from the distance, opposing the diagonal movement of the clouds. The long stream would provide more opportunity to reflect the colorful sky, leading the viewer's eye to the cow.
After recently completing some brightly colored watercolor paintings, I chose more earthy colors for this rural scene. I tried hard not to get too detailed with the farm but I am addicted to details! I didn't want the background to overpower the work, distracting from my focal point. The backlighting of the cow sets it off from the dark value I used for the bank of the stream, and the white highlights on the water from her movement help to bring the attention there. The painting captures much of what I love about my rural surroundings in East Tennessee."
