"A few years ago I photographed Michael the fiddler while he was performing with others at a traditional Scottish Burns Dinner. I envisioned capturing his concentration, the festivity of the occasion, the dramatic lighting, and the posture of his body in a painting. It has finally come together, in this watercolor on paper.
Technically, I painted with only three primary colors, letting them blend on the paper as well as mixing certain colors on my palette. I've used this method for many paintings and many subjects. As long as the dark and light values are properly depicted, the actual color does not matter. I like the brilliance I can achieve with these transparent hues.
I eliminated the background elements and used my darkest dark to keep the focus on my subject. Thank you to Michael for giving me the privledge of creating this painting."
