"I found this photo of a bald eagle to be very majestic and inspirational and felt it would be a great subject for a small scratchboard. Working on a black board smaller than an index card requires fine detail and smaller strokes with the abrasive tools than might be used on a larger scratchboard and a larger subject, so it was a new challenge for me. I created much of the feather detail with very thin bundles of needles which are manufactured and sold for tattoo-ing eyebrows! Color was added when I finished all the scratching, using watercolor pencils. I simply rubbed the pencil colors (as if drawing with them) onto an index card then dipped into them with a dampened small paintbrush and applied them to the scratchboard. The color areas were so small that this seemed to be easier than mixing paints or inks. I applied the colors in a very thin and transparent way so the scratching detail would still show through. All of my scratchboards are sealed with a clear archival finish, so the surface is protected and does not need to be covered with glass."
Thanks to Evelyn D. Harrison for the reference photo of the bald eagle.
