"I've done many paintings of people, primarily folks I know, showing them in some activity or setting, and working from reference photos I took myself. The human face is a struggle for me to paint, especially if I have never meant the person. Every feature - eyes, nose, lips, teeth, brows, skin, etc. - has its own complexitities and differences, and the overall 'arrangement' is equally distinctive. That's what makes us individuals! Capturing what makes each face one-of-a-kind is the key to being successful as a portrait painter. I definitely do not consider myself a portrait artist - unless the subject is a dog or cat!
This being said, I typically back off when a stranger asks me to paint a portrait from their photo. This one was an exception. As soon as I looked at the image of this precious girl, her magical eyes, the messy face, and the adorable hat and clothes, I melted... and accepted the commission!
I guess I nailed it because Violet's family all love the painting and it seems it will become a family treasure. What could make me more happy?!?!
