"When I am struggling with my painting techniques I often revert to an image within my comfort zone. I've discovered also that repeating a subject helps me improve with each new attempt. So I selected another photo of a backlit red poppy for this circle-format whiskey floral painting.
My palette was composed of transparent and semi-transparent fine watercolors from QoR and Daniel Smith. Various synthetic paints in the Quinacridone family gave me a variety of vibrant hues, and I worked hard at applying very light washes and glazing layers. Working in the style of traditional watercolor painting, the areas which appear white in my watercolor paintings are always the unpainted paper. In this case, those whites really define the brilliant sunlight, and the light coral shades suggest the transparency of the thin petals. The fluttering edges looked like they were dancing in the breeze and inspired my title for this little painting.”
