“Imagine walking in the woods and discovering this amazing flower of striking reds and yellows. I didn’t know what it was when I found several blooming near the edge of one of my woodland trails, but knew it was a treasure to behold… and a challenging subject for a painting, with such a variety of interesting and unusual shapes.
I found a beautiful reference photo among my huge collection, with backlighting from the sun filling the 2” tall flower with translucence. The light passing through creates a variety of colors, from white to yellow to coral to red. Many transparent red pigments in watercolor are more pinkish than I wanted for this painting, but I found that QoR brand of Quinacridone Magenta plus Transparent Pyrole Orange would mix in various ratios to give me many shades of red. Drawing from my scratchboard painting techniques, I made some fine scratches into the dark paint along edges of the plant parts to create the minute white hairs you see on close inspection of this beautiful wild flower.”
