"Bloodroot is one of the beautiful spring wildflowers I discovered blooming in my woods soon after moving to Tennessee years ago. The bloom is pure white and it is striking when it opens against the dead leaves still on the ground from winter. The leaf is also distinctively shaped, and I look forward to seeing them emerge from the forest floor every March.
I've painted this with a limited palette of the three primary watercolors. In this case, I've used Winsor & Newton Antwerp Blue, Winsor Red, and Winsor Yellow. The colors are not realistic, but I've used values to define the objects. I aimed to make the blossoms dominate, with the leaves, twigs, and foliage plants less important in the background.
I was especially proud to be selected the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Spring Pilgrimage 2019 Artist of the Year. My two great loves, painting and wildflowers, shared the honor as this painting was featured on event t-shirts, mugs, posters, decals and promotional materials. In addition, the honor included a Solo Exhibition of my work at the renowned Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN."
