"I typically paint from my own reference photos, but in this case I used one taken by my sister Anne. She celebrated the birth of her first grandson in 2019 and I loved the photos of him which she emailed to me over the miles which separate us. One photo of baby Dylan and his dad, my nephew Kevin, showed their hands in the lower corner. I decided this would be a challenge to use just that part of the photo to create a small scratchboard as a surprise to send to my sister for Christmas.
I am comfortable using black scratchboard for animal fur, but skin is a great challenge. I concentrated on creating the various grey tones with crosshatching, using an x-acto knife, as I had seen on videos. Since then I have watched other accomplished scratchboard artists use other techniques for depicting skin, so I'll be tackling future skin tones with different methods. For now, I think my little painting pleased my sister, and that's what counts most."
