Flanders Poppy

"My red poppies re-seed themselves profusely, but don’t germinate so well where I want them! They are so lovely, that I only pull them up when they sprout from the gravel in our driveway. These gorgeous big blooms have been a subject of my art in the past, as a large watercolor and as an acrylic on canvas. In my current quest to paint a whiskey watercolor miniature with glowing colors I chose to work from another of my oodles of poppy photos, this time in the common whiskey painting size of 5” x 4”.

Practicing what I learned from my previous floral, Rose of Sharon, I used both watercolor paints and watercolor pencils for this poppy. To contrast the reds of the flower I used primarily green shades for a soft out-of-focus appearance in the background.

My title refers to the red poppy symbolizing the memory of fallen soldiers from the poem called "In Flanders Fields" by John McRae."

This Whiskey Painting was created with watercolors diluted with Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey.
