“My goal of creating a mini whiskey painting of a glowing white flower turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated. It took several tries to get the results I was aiming for in painting this Narcissus flower. My first two attempts were too colorful for my tastes, likely because my watercolor style has long been to use saturated colors. For the first two tries I chose a limited palette of 2 reds, 2 yellows, 2 blues plus an orange. This provided me with warm and cool color options and the ability to mix an unlimited variety of other colors. Before putting the brush to my panel I created test swatches to make it easier for me to get just the shades I want once I started the painting. I needed to use more diluted pigments, using very transparent paint choices (some watercolors are more opaque than others.)
I was determined to improve; my second try was better but still not what I was aiming for. I tried two different flowers, Rose of Sharon and Flanders Poppy, before my third attempt at capturing this Narcissus. This time I used QoR™ and Daniel Smith paints, selecting only colors rated transparent or semi-transparent. The results this time were even better than the first two and I decided it is a keeper. I love the circular format and was anxious to continue the series… and continue improving my technique.”
