"This comical goat inspired a scratchboard painting, with the wonderful textures of his fur and front-on pose. Goat eye pupils are very peculiar, a horizontal black slot rather than a circle as in other mammals, and I liked the appearance of his eye from this viewpoint.
I had taken many photos years ago of the side of my friend Carolyn's barn which had interesting openings, hardware, and weathered barnboard. Through the magic of Photoshop, I combined the photo with the goat reference. I did some altering of the barn itself, moving things around to get the most interesting hinges and wood, and placing the goat in the window, off-center within my composition. I love using scratchboard for wood textures - the more old and worn, the better! I purposely made the boards a light value, so the focus would be on the goat himself. For those who don't know, a male goat is a billy."
