"This is the second of five Whiskey Paintings in my “Red Barn” series. Each is painted in watercolors, diluted with alcohol spirits in the water. I chose Jack Daniel Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey, since it is distilled in my home state. I love old barns and have a huge reference photo file of barns in my area. Not all are red, but I could use artistic license on those just weathered to grey. The exhibit would be on display over July 4th, our nation’s 250th birthday, so I added a barn quilt in red, white and blue to each barn I painted. I titled each painting to reflect my patriotic theme.

This barn is walking distance from my home. We rarely get heavy snowfall here in East Tennessee, but one year when we got good accumulation I hiked the area and photographed the barns in snow. Years ago I did a large painting with acrylics on canvas of this same barn, called “December Snow. For the new Whiskey Painting, I used my same reference photo to create a winter scene in my series. I wanted to vary the new miniature watercolor from the previous painting, so I flipped the image to face the barn in the opposite direction, and changed the barn color to red."
