"This is the first of five Whiskey Paintings in my “Red Barn” series. Each is painted in watercolors, diluted with alcohol spirits in the water. I chose Jack Daniel Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey, since it is distilled in my home state.

I was inspired to paint this series of miniature watercolors as my entries into my first Whiskey Painters of America exhibition. This show is in its 14th year in 2026, and the host venue is the Red Barn at Lareau Farm in Waitsfield, Vermont. I love old barns and have a huge reference photo file of barns in my area. Not all are red, but I could use artistic license on those just weathered to grey. The exhibit would be on display during July 4th, our nation’s 250th birthday, so I added a barn quilt in red, white and blue to each barn I painted. I titled each painting to reflect my patriotic theme.

I have photographed this barn many times over the years, watching it deteriorate and brought back to life. I chose to depict it in an autumn setting. Where I grew up in New England, rock walls defined the border of many old farm pastures. East Tennessee soil is not so rocky, so cedar trees have been cut for fence posts for generations, with barbed wire strands attached, as I show in this painting."
