(2) Accepted into the juried Georgia Watercolor Society 2020 Member Exhibition; Juror and acclaimed artist Pat Dews said: 'There was one painting, "Honeysuckle," which was gorgeous, gorgeous. I really wanted to know how the artist created those textures, bursting with colors....'
"My backlit photo of Japanese Honeysuckle, one of multitudes I have taken of these showy flowers, just begged to be painted and Ampersand Aquabord™ seemed like the best surface to recreate it in watercolor.
I created "Honeysuckle" with a limited palette of three primary colors. The unique characteristics of Aquabord allowed me to manipulate the paints in wonderful ways, re-wetting and lifting color either partially or back to the white surface, layering transparent colors over each other for interesting glowing effects, and using a Speedball nib to scratch through the paint to reveal the underlying white clay surface. To create the fine veins of the leaves, I painted green shades all over a leaf, scratched white lines for the veins, then carefully painted over the white with bright yellow. For a realistic touch and dimensionality, I then added darker greens to create the tiny shadows of the veins. Other areas scratched to white were left pure and clean as my last step in creating this artwork.
The juror's comment made me very proud!"
