"This painting combines many of my favorite painting subjects - an old vehicle, a weathered barn, wildflowers, a mountain backdrop, and old cedar fenceposts with barbed wire. The Volkswagen was my initial inspiration, when I saw it abandoned in a field outside an auto junk yard. Worn paint, foggy windows, missing tires, rusty wheels - I couldn't resist attempting to capture all those textures. The "Beetle" is such an icon, I knew it would appeal to an audience, particularly of my generation.
I specifically designed the layout with the vehicle pointing into the field. The winding farm road leads the eye into the background, culminating at the old barn. I chose to paint a barn with red paint fading from the wood siding, to pick up the hues of the car.
With tongue-in-cheek, I added Queen Anne's lace among the foreground flowers and titled the painting "Red Bug" as reference to the car as well as to a nickname for "chiggers," a nasty southern summer bug which gather and hide under the umbrella-like flower cluster."
