"I was honored when someone I met while exhibiting my art at a show asked me to do this dog portrait as a surprise for an ailing friend. It proved to be more difficult than I first anticipated, due to the photo references provided. One of the two dogs had already passed away, and I was not given any in-focus photos with a good pose. I had to combine photos in Photoshop to create a good reference. The second dog's photos also left much to be desired. In combining the two dogs into one portrait, I had to size them relative to each other - which was hard to do since the photos of them together had them at different distances from the camera. Also, the reference photos were of the dogs at different ages, so more juggling to depict them as young or old together! Along the way, the painting was reviewed by my client and by the husband of the recipient, requiring me to make several adjustments. This is why I most often paint commissions in acrylics, which are opaque and easy to paint over!
In the end, the painting pleased its owner, and that was my ultimate goal."
