ACCOLADES: One of 71 paintings juried into 37th Tennessee Watercolor Society Biennial Exhibition 2020
"This is the culmination of my series of watercolor paintings with blown bubbles. I became intrigued with the challenge of depicting bubbles in a painting; they are three-dimensional, transparent, and defined by reflections and the appearance of rainbow colors on the surface. I practiced painting bubbles in many different media before creating this large watercolor on paper of my great nephew Liam. You can see other bubble paintings in my Gallery.
I had taken a number of photos of Liam blowing bubbles. I particularly loved his expression in this one, feeling it would make a captivating painting. The background came from another photo I took in the woods surrounding my home. I positioned the foliage so the lightest arched branch balanced with the off-center face. I arranged the bubbles so there would be dark and light areas as a backdrop.
I used many different colors in this painting, reserving the brightest hues for the colors on the bubbles. I painted the figure in the sharpest focus and tried to incorporate soft and hard edges elsewhere."
