I’m Doing A Happy Dance!

I’ve just learned that my watercolor painting on Aquabord™ “Baby Boomer” has been awarded the 2nd Place “Award of Excellence” in the Tennessee Watercolor Society’s 2023 Online Exhibition. In chosing the show and award winners, Juror Mary Ann Beckwith said “It is a wonderful collection of paintings executed with creativity and skill exemplifying the many competent watercolorists of the TnWS. I selected paintings with strong content, design, and beauty, drawing my attention and keeping it. It was difficult to pare … Read More

It is with surprise, joy and excitement that I announce that TWO of my paintings have been selected among only 41 chosen for “Arts in the Airport” at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville TN! My Double Header

There is alway more to learn about creating art, and that’s part of my passion. I could be a forever student! I recently complete a fabulous online workshop with a portrait artist whose work I have admired for years, Ali Cavanaugh. She is a master of creating exquisite watercolor portraits on white clay-coated Aquabord™ panels made by Ampersand Arts. I’ve used this combination of paints and surface for many paintings, primarily learning how to handle the unique qualities of watercolor … Read More

Creating Winter With Watercolor

This small watercolor painting was inspired by a photo taken by my friend Debra of her husband Mike, all bundled up for a walk in a snowstorm. I was drawn by the overall monotone blue-grey coloring, contrasted by his skin tones. I decided to crop the image tightly to a square format, putting my main subject smack in the center – not the best composition by the ‘rules’ of painting, but I thought it appropriate in this instance. As I … Read More

A Baby Boomer, Like Me!

“Baby Boomer” is my newest painting, finished and framed just in time to include it with my 17 other original paintings on their way to my Solo Exhibition in Clarksville TN, which opens on October 5th, 2021. Time is eating away at this old vehicle and I was inspired to feature it in a painting since I first spotted it parked behind a commercial building near where I live in SE Tennessee. I knew that the fabulous colors and textures … Read More

Honeysuckle

Japanese Honeysuckle is an introduced, somewhat invasive, climbing vine which grows on my land. The frilly white blossoms are highly fragrant and last from April to July, and I don’t mind their intrusion. The red young stems are strong and used in traditional basket weaving. As it grows, the larger woody vine will grow in a spiral around a tree branch. When the vine is removed, the branch is left with a twisted appearance, which some woodcarvers prize for creating … Read More

A Tale of Two Irises

My bearded irises have flowered beautifully this spring, inspiring me to paint them. The delicate petals are ruffled and nearly transparent, with one group growing upward and the other down. Their feathery ‘beards’ and tightly folded buds provide additional interesting shapes and values. As usual, I took far too many reference photos, being especially drawn to those with backlighting. I wanted to give a different twist to painting an iris, and I was inspired by the paintings of an artist … Read More

Painting Emma

I was ready to try a large watercolor portrait on white Aquabord™ and hunted through my reference photos for an inspiring subject. I had taken some photos of my 3 year old great-niece Emma a month earlier when we took her to a terrific children’s museum. She is cute, bubbly, and a happy little girl; she was excited and animated with the fun activities at the museum. I got some good photos of her but none of them jumped out … Read More

Earlier this month I received an invitation to be an “Ampersand Artist Ambassador” and I am truly honored.
