"This is the fifth of five Whiskey Paintings in my “Red Barn” series. Each is painted in watercolors, diluted with alcohol spirits in the water. I chose Jack Daniel Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey, since it is distilled in my home state. I love old barns and have a huge reference photo file of barns in my area. Not all are red, but I could use artistic license on those just weathered to grey. The exhibit will be on display over July 4th, our nation’s 250th birthday, so I added a barn quilt in red, white and blue to each barn I painted. I titled each painting to reflect my patriotic theme.

My first four red barn miniature paintings illustrated the four seasons. Since I could enter five in the upcoming exhibition, I decided to tackle a night scene as my fifth. Often I wake in the night to see a full moon illuminating everything outdoors and wanted to duplicate this image. The warm lighting inside the barn suggests someone’s presence and spills out to light the ground in front. Tennessee is my “home sweet home,” so it was easy to title this last watercolor in my series.

Each of the “Red Barn” series paintings were painted with the same palette of watercolors. I chose 3 warm primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and three cool primaries. The colors were QoR brand, and included Quinacridone Magenta, Transparent Pyrrole Orange, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Primrose, Ultramarine Blue, and Manganese Blue."
