"This is the second of three paintings I did of this young girl named Sofia.I first met her mom Jennie at age 7, and the photo I worked from reminds me very much of little Jennie.
The first try for this image was a little 4" x 5" Whiskey Painting, Jennie's Girl. On this larger version I expanded the background, adding some figures in the distance, a rocky jetty, and more surf. As my work shows, I love detail, and I have a hard time painting in a loose style. I seriously attempted to be more fluid with my watercolors in this painting, and I tried to bury the figures in a bit of mist so they wouldn't detract with my main subject. Was I successful? Maybe not! One of the first people who saw this done made the comment "I love the people in the background," so maybe they were a mistake.
For the rocks I tried a technique of scraping away the still-wet paint with the edge of a credit card. That was fun and I liked the effect. Note to self: do rocks again in the next painting. I always loved the big cumulus clouds over the ocean when I lived in Florida, but maybe they are another distraction in this painting. OK... back to the drawing board for a final, full sheet watercolor, of Sofia!"
